First RAF Raid on Berlin
In reply to the Luftwaffe’s mistaken attack on London Churchill ordered RAF Bomber Command to attack Berlin. Hitherto most RAF operations over Germany had been leaflet raids and attacks on coastal targets. A total of 81 RAF bombers attacked the German capital. Goering, who had promised that Berlin would never be attacked, suffered Hitler’s wrath for this incident. Overall however, the damage to Berlin was relatively light in material terms.
