US Paratroopers Jump on Kamiri
It was on Independence Day in 1944 that paratroopers from the US 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment jumped on to Kamiri airfield on Noemfoor Island just off New Guinea in the Pacific. Their task was to reinforce the US forces holding the airfield against a Japanese counter attack. The jump was made at altitudes of between 175 and 350 feet – very low indeed. The Drop Zone was a runway littered with vehicles and other materiel. Of the 739 jumpers 72 suffered serious injury. In subsequent operations the paratroopers joined the amphibious task force in mopping up the Island.
