Active Homing
Homing based upon the target emitting a signal that a missile can follow.
Airborne operations
Operations involving the establishment of forces on land from the air.
Amphibious operations
Operations that involve the establishment of forces ashore from a sea based platform.
Appliqué
Extra armour that is added to an AFV, often over the top of, and spaced from, its existing protection.
Area weapon
Weapon that does not rely on accuracy for its effect but which will put its effect over a relatively large target area.
Ballistic missile
Missile that follows a ballistic trajectory after its motor burns out.
Barbette
A raised and often unmanned gun turret on a vehicle or aircraft
Battalion
A unit – usually infantry – of about 6-700 men split into 3 or 4 rifle companies with its own supporting units for administration and combat support.
Battery
A group of guns, normally 4-6.
Beam riding
A system that allows a missile to follow a laser or radar beam to its target.
